VTP (VLAN Trunking Protocol)
- It used to share
VLAN configurations with multiple switches
- Maintain
consistency throughout that network
- VTP is a CISCO
proprietary protocols
VTP manages the
addition, deletion and renaming of VLANs across the network from a
central point of control.
VTP Modes:
- Server Mode
- Client Mode
- Transparent Mode
Server Mode:
- It is a default
mode
- It creates,
modifies and deletes VLANs
- It used for
synchronizes VLAN configuration
- It sends and
forwards advertisements
- It saves
configuration in NVRAM
Client Mode:
- It cannont Add,
Modify and Delete its VLAN configuration
- It synchronizes
VLAN configuration
- It forwards
advertisements
- It doesn’t store
VLAN configuration
- It learns from the
server every time it boots up
Transparent Mode:
- It Add, Modify and
Delete VLAN configured
- It does not
synchronize VLAN configuration
- It saves
configuration in NVRAM
- It forwards
advertisements
VTP Configuring
conditions:
- All links must be
configured as trunks
- Information will
be passed only if switches connected with fastEthernet or higher
ports
- Domain name must
be match and it is case-sensitive
- Password must be
match
- VTP version must
be match for all the switches for sending and receiving VTP messages
- Once VTP enabled
uses version 1 only
VTP Versions:
You don’t see any vlan on the transparent mode switch as the
transparent will not synchronize the vlan information from any other
switches but still forward the vlan information
- You can see the
vlans created on the transparent switch are not present in any of the
other switches (SW-1, SW-2 & SW-3) because the switch in
transparent mode will not synchronize the vlan information
- Revision number
for switches in the transparent mode will be always ZERO
